What Brands Are Offered?
Discountsheds.com.au offers quality Australian made gardens sheds, workshop sheds, patio awnings, carports, garages & aviaries - from the countries leading manufacturers, including: Absco, Oldfileds Treco, Spanbilt, Durabuild EzyShed, & Outstanding Solutions.

Absco Sheds - What's All The Fuss About?

ABSCO Industries is a wholly owned Australian company manufacturing a large range of steel products including Garden Sheds and Outdoor Buildings.

From its manufacturing facility in Brisbane, ABSCO distributes an extensive range of outdoor storage products throughout Australia, as well as exporting to the Pacific region and Europe. ABSCO Industries has been the major supplier of these products to the hardware and outdoor building industries for over 25 years. The good reputation that has built up during those years is now being recognised throughout Australia and rapidly expanding overseas markets including New Zealand and Europe.

Through its superior organisation, ABSCO Industries can claim the enviable reputation of being the leader in maintaining supply of its products to its customers "ALL products are ready for despatch ex factory within two working days".

Absco is the market leader, certainly in Australia, if not the world, for our innovative designs and our range of garden sheds and other products that incorporate the world patented SNAPTiTEEasy to Assemble System".

The ABSCO SNAP-TiTE system is revolutionary because it dramatically reduces the number of fasteners needed to assembly a garden shed.

Many average size garden sheds require over 600 screws, nuts, bolts, and rivets to be fitted, whilst with some others, holes must be drilled during assembly.

Compare that with the innovative SNAP-TiTE system, which makes DIY construction very easy, because it uses only 200 fasteners to assemble an average size garden shed!

Not only does the SNAP-TiTE system make assembly easier and faster, the end result is also significantly stronger.

ABSCO has put the SNAP-TiTE system to the test too, demonstrating superior strength in laboratory tests carried out to international ISO standards.
That's because the revolutionary SNAP-TiTE system features significantly more anchorage points between the wall section and edge channels.

Compare that with the average garden shed and you'll see why! With SNAP-TiTE every corrugation on both sides of all wall sections feature a punched lug which locks into the patented edge channel to maximise strength.

Naturally, the benefit that the SNAP-TiTE system delivers by dramatically reducing the number of fasteners, translates to enormous savings in the time it takes to assemble a typical garden shed. With other brands, a whole weekend can be spent completing the installation.

Compare that with the innovativeSNAP-TiTE system, which enables the average home handyperson to complete the task in only a couple of hours!

The revolutionary SNAP-TiTE system not only makes assembly faster and easier, it also helps deliver a professional finish. That's because the snap-fit design of the wall and channel sections takes out the guesswork. With typical garden sheds these components must be aligned, drilled and fixed together with unsightly screws, rivets, or bolts.

Compare that to the SNAP-TiTE system, which aligns and snaps components together perfectly, without the need for drilling and fitting rows of fasteners!

Can I Install The Shed By Myself?

All products offered for sale on this Discountsheds.com.au web site are designed and manufactured for the DIY'er.  Historically, more than 70% of shed products sold in Australia are erected & installed by their purchasers.

Each manufacturer's design & assembly protocols differ, resulting in varying comparative assembly times & processes.  However, each product is supplied with concise & easy to understand & follow assembly instruction manuals.

Always allow sufficient time to complete the task, & only commence the assembly during favourable weather conditions.

Although the sheds are designed to be assembled by a single individual, another pair of hands always helps.

Where are the sheds manufactured?
All metal sheds sold by Discountsheds.com.au are proudly manufactured in Australia. Some manufacturer's exclusively use Bluescope steel, whilst others may use either Bluescope steel or imported steel.
The range of resin sheds sold by Discountsheds.com.au,are distributed nationally by Outstanding Solutions Australia. These sheds are fully imported & are relative newcomers to our market. They have however been available & extremely popular in North America & Europe, for many, many years.

What Are The Warranties Offered & How Do I Register My Warranty?
Each manufacturer offers their unique product warranty, both in its terms & conditions, as well as the period of time covered.  Please refer to the product information detail for specific information.  One of the most comprehensive manufacturer's warranty is from the Absco brand.  Absco exclusively use Bluescope Colorbond®  or Zinclaume® steel  in the majority of their product range and offer a thirty (30) year warranty.   Recently a budget "Eco-Nomy" Range has also been introduced, that uses imported steel & offers a ten (10) yr warranty.  If you purchased an Absco product, log onto the manufacturer's web site at  www.absco.com.au  and select the "Register Warranty" button on the top navigation bar to the home page, & follow the prompts.
For other manufacturer's, the warranty form will be included with the delivered product, for your due completion & submission via postal services.

What is the difference between the various roof configurations/types mentioned?

A GABLE roof is a roof with a raised peak at both ends. This allows the roof to slope in two directions. In garden sheds, the gables can be located at either the front & back walls... or the side walls.
Where the gables are in the front & back walls of the garden shed, the roof slopes (or falls) from the middle to either right & left side (much like the profile of a house).
Where the gables or peaks are in the side walls, the roof will slope from the middle high point towards the front (above the door) and from the middle towards the back.

A SKILLION roof falls or slopes in one direction only. Typically it will slope from a high point at the top of the rear wall, downwards towards the front wall. In some models however, the skillion roofs can be reversed or fall from either side wall (refer to individual product details).

A FLAT roof is simply just that, flat. This roof has no fall. However the corrugations of the sheeting assist in the prevention of pooling water. The roof also has a generous side overhang, by 50mm. This also assists in preventing dripping water tracking on the underside of the roof lip & into the inside of the shed. (refer to individual product details).

What Accessories are available for garden sheds?
The main retailed options/accessories that are available for your garden shed, are -

Refer to each product's details for further information.

Are the assembly instructions easy to follow?
Each manufacturer puts together their own assembly manuals which are of course supplied with the products. They all share the common goal of providing a concise, easy to read & comprehend, list of instructions that are designed to make the task of assembly efficient and easy for the do-it-yourself handyman.
Where available, discountsheds.com.au has provided assembly videos, which can be found in the "Technical Tips" drop down menu on the top navigation toolbar of this web site.
Please keep the manual for future use.

What is the best method for securing a garden shed to a base?
Your shed must be adequately fixed & secured to a base to ensure it does not blow away or move in inclement weather conditions.
It is a generally accepted practice & one recommended by the manufacturer's, that dynabolts or similar be used to secure a garden shed to a concrete slab.
Each manufacturer designs their sheds in their own unique way. Some merely require the appropriate size dynabolt to be used fixing through the sheds' existing perforated base channel, others require an anchoring/fixing bracket & dynabolt, and others again include all masonry anchors & fixings required, with the shed.
Where the shed is to be situated on a timber deck, concrete pavers or other type of surface; please ensure that both the shed & the base are adequately secured to the ground.
As always, follow each manufacturer's recommendations.

What tools or other resources do I need to assemble a shed?

Anything Else ???

Sealing The Base Of Your Shed

Where required or desired, sealing the base of your shed can be accomplished using the appropriate professional grade & quality, silicone sealants.  Neutral Cure silicone rubber sealants are the only sealants recommended for use with COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel. Look for the words "Neutral Cure" on the sealant cartridge to make sure.  Always follow the maufacturer's instructions & always ensure both the surface areas of the slab & shed are thoroughly clean & free of dust, oils, & other contaminants (to ensure the best possible surface for bonding).

Please remember, if water does get into a sealed shed (through windows, doors, or other entry point), you are also traping it in.

Graphic below depicts anchoring & silicone sealing of an Oldfields Treco Shed (for illustrative purposes only)

What is Zinclaume®?
Zincalume is a registered trademark name of Bluescope steel's galvanized steel. It has an alloy treatment applied to sheet metal that delivers the steel its long lasting properties. It has a silver satin like finish.

What is COLORBOND® steel?
COLORBOND® steel combines the corrosion resistance of a ZINCALUME® steel base with a durable, oven baked paint finish.

What gauge is the steel used in the sheds?
Select manufacturers may use different gauge materials, allowing for a range of products offered at lower retail price point. Commonly, these can be identified by a more modest manufacture's warranty offered.
Most garden shed manufactures procure the material from varying global sources. Absco Industries exclusively uses Australian Bluescope steel, whilst other manufacturer's may purchase the raw material from other sources as well.

Based upon the source, gauges differ. Structural capability is a function of the steel's base metal thickness & steel grade.  Corrosion performance is afforded by the metalic coating thickness & type.  To this end the Australian Standards referenced by the BCA (Building Code Of Australia) specify minimum compliance thresholds.  When doing comparisions, always remember the differentiation between the published thicknesses.  BMT or Base Metal Thickness is the thickness of the steel without metal & where applicable, primer & colour coatings.  TCT or Total Coated Thickness, is the thickness including protective & finishing coat applications. These coatings or applications are usually .05mm thick in themselves, and do not contribute to structual steel strenght.

What is the wind rating of the products? (W33 / N2) (W41 / N3) (W50 / C)

Each supplier designs, engineers & manufactures their products independently. Having said that, most sheds (although not all) are engineered to a W41 / N3 rating (up to 147klm winds).
Other non-shed products (awnings, carports, garages etc) are usually offered in various wind ratings ranging from W33 / N2 (W33 /N2 = winds up to 118Klm/hr) or higher. This enables the customer to find a product applicable to the local authority & building code requirements of their area and installation address.

Extract of Common Classifications:

W33 / N2 - designed for winds up to 40 metre per second

W41 / N3-C1 - designed for winds up to 50 metres per second

W50 / N4-C2 - designed for winds up to 61 meters per second
Refer to each product's details for further information.

What wind rating do I require for the product I wish to purchase?
Required wind ratings can & do vary across Australia. In fact they may vary within city limits or even from street to street. It is highly recommended that you contact your local authority, to ascertain what is required at your physical address, before you make your purchase.
Under Australian Standards AS4055, the geographic area of Australia is split up into a ten-band wind classification system, from N1 - N6 (which is assigned to various regions). The requirement for your address depends upon a combination of factors from your location/region within Australia, to the shielding / buffering effect of the surrounding terrain & topography.

Local Authority (Council) approvals
Regulations vary amongst local authorities in Australia. However most require the homeowner to apply for approval for any structure that covers the ground more than 10 square meters. (E.g. an item that is 3m x 3m or 10ft x 10ft shed is approx 9 sq meters & would be exempt).
To make yourself aware of any possible restrictions or other compliance issues, please check with your local council & ascertain what their requirements are & where applicable, what the process & costs for approval, are.
Although not common, be aware that for items that require approval, size may not be the only factor governing where you can position your product. There may also be considerations regarding how close you can erect your product to boundary fences, sewers, storm water, mains, easements etc.

Logistics: How long will it take to receive my product?
It is recommended to allow an estimated minimum of 7 - 21 working days, for dispatch & delivery of most goods by the manufacturers (although in many cases this may be much less).  This time frame applies to garden shed products - Carports, Garages & Awnings will take longer (up to 35 working days for production, dispatch & delivery).
Discountsheds.com.au utilises the nationwide freight & delivery networks of our supplier partners. As such, the process differs & is dependent upon the brand of product you have selected. This is covered in the freight & delivery section of the product have or may select.

Please Note: In order for the manufacturers and their freight carrier agents to keep costs down, all home delivery costs for garden sheds & aviaries are now calculated and offered as ASSISTED DELIVERIES. That means that the customer must ensure an able bodied person is present to receive and assist the delivery driver with the unloading of their shed order. In addition, the property must be able to accommodate appropriate access for the freight carriers tailgate truck (in order to avoid the cost of attendance to the premises and not being able to complete the delivery). Failure to do so MAY incur additional delivery & handling fees.  These additional fees may be levied by the manufacturer & their freight carrier agents, & charged to the customer by Discountsheds.com.au.  These costs start but are not limited to $90 plus GST.  All deliveries are to the front of the property only.

Logistics: How Do I Track Down My Shipment?

When your order & payment is processed by discountsheds.com.au, (usually by the next working day) you will be emailed a tax receipt. This receipt, will confirm the product ordered.

How can I clean COLORBOND® steel?
For information on how to keep your COLORBOND® steel looking great, view our page Maintain COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel. If you think you may have fungus growing on the surface, view the Identify and Remove Fungus page from the Bluescope steel "Colorbond" website - http://www.colorbond.com/

How do I fix a scratch on Colorbond® Steel?
The recommendation is not to touch up. Minor scratching will not effect the life of the sheet and is rarely obvious to the casual observer. The use of aerosol touch-up sprays usually result in overspray & whilst not imediately obvious, the sprayed on colour may weather at a different rate to the oven-dried paint on Colorbond® Steel.

How can I prevent condensation forming on my roof?
Condensation forms under/on roof sheeting when the sheeting becomes colder than the air in contact with it. Water vapour carried in the air then condenses on the colder surface of the roof sheet. To minimise the risk of water damage to ceilings or corrosion related to condensation under steel roof sheeting, a vapour barrier should be provided under the sheeting to prevent contact between the moist air in the building and the roof sheeting.
Reflective foil laminates (sarking) which are commonly used to provide heat insulation under roof sheeting can serve a dual function as a vapour barrier, by thoroughly sealing the foil overlaps with moisture impervious adhesive tape. The laps should be about 100 mm and kept in close contact when positioning the laminate so the tape can be readily applied.
The laminate must be allowed to drape between the roof supports so that the cold temperature of the roof sheeting will not be transmitted to the laminate by contact. If this were to happen condensation could form on the underside of the laminate and may drip into the ceiling space.
Ventilation of the ceiling cavity may assist in the reduction of condensation however it has been shown that ventilation will not completely eliminate the condensation cycle. In certain marine situations ventilation may also carry salts into the roof cavity which will, in the presence of condensation, lead to accelerated corrosion attack.

Can I use touch up paint on COLORBOND® steel?
BlueScope Steel does not recommend the use of touch up paints on COLORBOND® steel. The manufacturing process that gives COLORBOND® steel its colour and gloss retention properties means that the surface weathers differently to air drying paint. After weathering, the areas which have been touched up will look different and can leave a blotchy look.

What sealants (silicone) can I use with COLORBOND® steel?
Neutral Cure silicone rubber sealants are the only sealants recommended for use with COLORBOND® steel and ZINCALUME® steel. Look for the words "Neutral Cure" on the sealant cartridge to make sure.

How Much Concrete Do I Need?

When determining the size of the concrete slab you will need to pour for your new shed, it is important to refer to the manufacturer’s recommended minimum slab dimension requirements.

In most cases, this recommended minimum will be the exact external base dimension of the shed, plus an additional 100mm in each direction. For example, if you purchased a shed whose base is exactly 3.0m x 3.0m, then the minimum slab should be – 3.1m x 3.1m.

It is recommended that slabs be 100mm in depth or thickness.

Calculation:►   The amount of concrete required is calculated as metric “Volume” (or m3 unit of measurement).

Note: "Concrete" is the final blend of cement, sand, gravel, & water components.

To calculate how much concrete is required, simply multiply the following –

A.                Length   (dimension across the front) of the required slab (in meters)   x

B.                Width     (dimension down the side) of the required slab (in meters)   x

C.                Depth     (dimension of the thickness) of the required slab (in meters)

For Example – Using the above slab dimension of 3.1m x 3.1m that is 100mm deep or thick… the calculation would be - A x B x C or 3.1m x 3.1m x 0.1m. This gives us a result of 0.96 m3

Notes:

·         Calculations do not allow for waste. Typically a 3-5% waste factor will need to be allowed for.

·         Calculations assume flat & level ground. They do not take into consideration fall or dips in the ground. The presence of these factors will require allowance for additional concrete or fill.

Concrete Options:►

Ready-Mix Concrete

This is the most cost effective option for larger jobs. Most suppliers will deliver smaller quantities with minimum loads from 0.3 of a cubic meter.

Be sure to discuss the use of the concrete (for a shed slab) with the supplier, so that the appropriate strength of concrete is used.

Pre-Blended Concrete Dry Mix Bags

These pre-blended bag mixes contain cement, sand, & aggregate – just add water.

This option is worth considering for those small jobs or where access is restricted.

Bags are typically available in 20kg packages.

The number of bags required, usually surprises people. For medium to large sheds, the number required is quite large & as such is cost prohibitive.

One 20kg premix bag generally provides 0.11 of a cubic meter (or 110  20 kg bags to provide 1m3)

Hand Mix

Requires far more effort, but is by far the most cost effective option.

Here, you will be required to purchase sand/gravel, cement, & perhaps hire of a concrete mixer.
